The ONLY advantage of having the historic plates is that you DON'T have to do emissions.  Thats the whole reason I went with them.  American Family has NO limit on the miles that you can put on your scout or anything.  In fact, I have mine listed as my primary.  This is the second truck I've ran collectors plates on to keep out of emissions.  Cost of insurance isn't any higher or anything through American Family.  In fact, they are the cheapest carriers I've found out of all of them...but thats just me.  (I don't work for them...promise).

That's funny, when I asked about that with the AZ MVD they were very clear that I would still need to go to emissions with the Historic Plates.  I used to have one but then had to insure my J@@p with Hagerty to get it on the road.  Are you in Maricopa Co?

Was the MVD lying to me?  They told me to sell the vehicle instead.

I was wrong about the plate...thats just an option.  But anything over 20yrs of age you can have your insurance company print out a "BS" letter saying that you have collectors insurance.  I don't carry full coverage on mine, and they still gave me collectors insurance letter.  It just gets you out of emmissions...thats all.  Which is  money saved...and you don't have to worry about failing.  Another buddy of mine at work just did this with a 1980 BMW...in Maricopa on Friday.  So I know this still works.  Wink

Ok just re-registered the pig and they let me use the storage address that is just outside of the boundaries. This works for me because I have another car registered, which happens to be a newer vehicle, so your mileage will vary.

I do have full coverage, got it right after Jayson painted it, and we have a stated value of $10k for it, but not on collector insurance. I can drive it, roll it, whatever and it is covered on or off-road. We carry Travelers insurance and runs about $150 per year. By way of comparison the 08 Tahoe runs us $250 per year.

Many insurance companies let you "list" a value of whatever you want, but will claim after an accident that the vehicle was worth less based on listings for used vehicles of the same type. You'll want to get the vehicle appraised by somebody qualified in order to back up any potential claim. I think there is a free value guide on the SSS website that's a good place to start.

Are you restricted to a maximum number of miles per year if you have collector's car insurance.  Does it restrict your off road use?

For Hagerty, I was told yes. If you even say off-road they click you off th line very fast.

Grundy however, I got more of a don't ask - don't tell answer.

Since I am registering out of the smog region I stuck with Travelers and a Stated value with no deteriation of coverage. I spoke to an appraiser and they use KBB and NADA for pricing. Since my Travelall did not come up on KBB it is stated we use the NADA pricing for comparison. Their average value for a 1200D 4X$ is $10,020, see below.

Original MSRP: N/A  Low
Retail Average
Retail High
Retail
Base Price $4,100 $8,350 $17,400
Options
Travelall 4x4 20% 20% 20%
TOTAL PRICE $4,920 $10,020 $20,880

DMV told me that there are NO restrictions for "collector" cars.  Historic car registry is another story though.  If you have it listed as "historic", then you have limits on mileage etc...  but not "collector".  I wouldn't worry about the mileage.  Not like anyone is going to actually check it anyhow.  My odometer doesn't even work in my scout right now...and I drive the hell out of it.  They didn't inspect it or anything since it was previously register'd in AZ prior to me buying it.  Only thing collectors claim does for you is get you out of emmissions.

Thanks for the tip on Collector Car Insurance.  I just switched my 75 and 62 over to it.  Saved me both on insurance cost and not having to get the 75 emissions tested.   Grin

Glad to hear it worked out for you too!  I was REALLY glad when I found out about that little trick.  I first did it on a 75 Ironhead Harley...then next on the 72 scout.
