We are headed towards Payson and doing the Pyeatt Draw run.

When: Friday, Saturday & Sunday June 25, 26 & 27, 2010

Campspot: Near the Trailhead - Dry camping, no facilities 'cept the ones you dig yourself and the water you bring.  Bring enough for the length of time you're staying if you don't plan on going into town.

Difficulty: Not sure, however there are supposed to be bi-passes for most, if not all obstacles.

This is an overnighter if you have the urge to stay away from the heat for a couple of days.  Some of us are going up Friday, some may come Saturday.  We will setup a "base" camp Friday and doing the trail Saturday so if you're coming up then, please let us know so we can wait for you!

Of course I'm making dinner for Saturday night!  Chicken and Sausage gumbo with fresh Italian bread and rice will be available.  You must bring your own drinks, empty stomach and stories to share...

Life is not a journey to the grave with intentions of arriving safely in a pretty. well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, worn out and loudly proclaiming..."WOW! What a ride!"

Here are the basic directions to get to Pyeatt Draw. Start at the intersection of 260 and 87 in Payson. Go north on 87 1.9 miles to N Houston Mesa Rd and turn right. There is a round about just before N Houston Mesa Rd and a Home Depot and Giant gas station on the left. Take N Houston Mesa Rd 4.7 Miles to fire control rd 198 and turn right. Take 198 4.4 miles and turn right just after creek bed. The creek bed is the start of the trail. Follow dirt road over the hill, through the creek bed and up the hill. Camp will be on the left on top of the hill. I will post signs along the way with SDS on them. Iam going up early on friday. Hope everybody makes it, its going to be alot of FUN. I stopped at the ranger station in Payson and  found out that we dont need no stinking permits.

Some were asking about permits: here is the Tonto Nat'l Forest site with info about them.

http://www.fs.fed.us/r3/tonto/tp/index.shtml

They call them "Day Use" passes...They are Visitor / Purchaser scratched (you do it yourself) - I have one in my glove compartment (for almost 2 years now) at all times. Hint, Hint...

You just need the $6 day pass to stay overnight or park for elongated periods in the Tonto. The passes are available nearly everywhere, I think the circle K right in Payson sells them.

Since camping will be done out of designated parks there is no need for any additional fees or extra passes. One pass is required per vehicle.

Please provide a USFS TNF link to verify that.  Everything I saw said passes only necessary at water and developed recreation sites.

All the text I found foe TNF read very differently from CNF, SBNF, and LPNF requirements for "Adventure Passes."

Thanks!

I called a ranger station and one ranger said we needed the pass, Bob talked to another that said we did not....very confusing. So instead of a ticket I am going to buck the $6 and be covered in case.

I was at the ranger station in Payson on tuesday and was told that you only need a pass at the lakes .

Good point A.  Spend the $6 (don't scratch it - save it) and keep it in your vehicle.  If you don't scratch it use it next time.

I have to agree and note that this weekend was absolutely awesome.  I'd like to personally express that I was extremely touched to be able to spend this time with such an awesome group of people.  You're all so nice to James and I, as well as our children, and it's very touching.  Whether at the camp site or on the trail, somebody had your back.  That is unique.

I took a great deal of pictures and I was able to pare them down to a robust but sensible album that both my IH brethren and peronal acquaintances could enjoy.  This album spans the majority of the camping trip, from Saturday morning breakfast to the SDS take over at the Payson Sonic on the drive home on Sunday.

Please note that most images have a descriptive title but some have a caption below to outline more intricate situations that occurred.  I hope you enjoy.

Great pictures Nicole!

That was a great weekend. It was a lot of fun. I really like that trail because of the variety of difficulty it has. Definiatly a good run to do in the summer.

Glad everyone made it home safe.

I'm just glad that I asked Jared to bring me a set or we wouldn't have been able to get your truck to finish the trail with us...weird how that happens!

Nicole, great photos! We will need to dub you the SDS journalistic photographer...  Smiley

Looks like a good trip, and actual forest, not all palo verde and cactus!!  I like the pic with James and Jared holding their new "bowed" draglinks.  I can honestly say that I have done that 3 times and finally decided to get the DOM and rod ends to build a beef one.  Haven't had one problem with it, out the door it only cost me around 20$ more than the 90$ that most vendors charge for the weaksauce stocker.  Dang I wish I was there, oh well next month I should be able to go.
