While I was fighting the S80 today trying to fit a replacement speedo cable in, I started thinking about replacing the gauges with something more modern. I thought about it some more after taking the test drive, and watching the speedo needle bounce ever so slightly, but enough to be annoying.
What I'm wondering is if there's a service out there that would fit modern electronic movements into the speedo, temp gauge, fuel gauge, etc while still retaining the factory original face plates? Or better yet, make new reproductions of either the factory faceplates, or whole gauges.
I started looking for complete after market gauges (largely to get a tach in there as well), but didn't really find anything that matched. Obviously I'm not going to find anything that would be an exact replacement, with the IH logo and all that, but all I'm really looking for is to replicate the fonts/style. The VDO oil pressure gauge that's in there now is pretty close, except for the needle, and I was looking at the Equus gauges at Checker Auto today that also look close, but nothing that really hits it.
I also considered making new face plate overlays like I've done in the past to make factory gauges in newer vehicles white faced, and while it looks OK for them, being that the printing process is so much different with laser or inkjet printers vs whatever they did 50 years ago, it never really looks right.
