Box Canyon near Florence, Arizona October 2009 Attendees (Scouts): Armando Verdugo, Teresa Terranova, Bob Hall, Jerry Stewart, Dustin Wilson, Greg Roemke, Lowell Roemke.
We met at Armando's house in Santan Valley around 7:30 AM. for a terrific breakfast that Armando made for us. Armando's Travelall was not running smoothly and Bob Hall attempted to set the dwell on the distributor but the "beast" was being difficult. Armando decided to ride with Teresa and we all took off down the Arizona Farms Road to Florence. Just north of Florence, we took the dirt road on the north side of the river to the south entrance of Box Canyon where we stopped to air down the tires. Teresa and Armando took the lead and we followed them into Box Canyon
After a bit we came to trail off to the side that went up and Teresa told on the CB that she was going up! Of course, everyone had to follow her and we reached a relatively level spot on top, we stopped to take a break and get something to drink.
The group discussed continuing on this side trail but I wimped out and they accommodated me by returning to the main trail. While we stopped to check out an old mine, a Toyota pickup passed us but soon returned, telling us that there was a "bad spot up ahead. We soon came to what I thought was an impassable section of the canyon with a cascade of ridges and rubble. Everyone got out to check it out and while I was thinking we had to turn around, Bob Hall took his Traveler though the most difficult spot of this section.
Teresa went next taking a less difficult line, followed by Jerry in an intermediate section. Then Teresa and Armando guided Greg on his first trail run in the "new" Scout through the route Teresa had taken. As soon as Greg got through, he jumped out and was happy to see that his rocker panels were still untouched. Dustin finished the section and it was on to a lunch spot. After lunch, we continued on a very dusty road until finally exiting onto the highway between Florence and Florence Junction about 3:30 PM.
